Digital License vs. Product Key in Windows 11: What's the Difference and How to Check Yours

Windows 11 activates in one of two ways — a digital license or a product key — and knowing which one you have matters before you reinstall Windows or change hardware.

Why: Activation pairs your license with this PC’s hardware. A digital license does that automatically with no key to type; a product key is the older 25-character code you enter manually.

Fix 1: Check which kind of activation you have

1. Open Settings > System > Activation.
2. Look at Activation state:
   • “Windows is activated with a digital license” — no key needed; the license lives on Microsoft’s servers tied to your hardware.
   • “Windows is activated with a digital license linked to your Microsoft account” — same, plus it follows your account, which makes reactivation after a hardware change much easier.
   • “Windows is activated using a product key” — activation is tied to a 25-character key you (or your PC maker) entered.

What each one is

Digital license (digital entitlement): A method of activation that doesn’t require you to enter a product key. It’s associated with your hardware and can be linked to your Microsoft account. You get one when you:

• Upgraded for free to Windows 11 from an eligible, genuine Windows 10 PC.
• Bought Windows from the Microsoft Store app (confirmation email confirms it).

Product key: A 25-character code in the format XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX. You get one when you:

• Bought a physical retail box (key on a label inside).
• Bought a digital copy from a retailer (key in the confirmation email).
• Got a PC with Windows preinstalled (key embedded in firmware by the manufacturer, or on a Certificate of Authenticity sticker).

Fix 2: Link your digital license to your Microsoft account

Linking is the single best thing you can do before changing hardware, because it lets the Activation troubleshooter reactivate you later.

1. Go to Settings > System > Activation.
2. Select Add an account and sign in with your Microsoft account.
3. The status should then read “linked to your Microsoft account.”

Fix 3: View or change your key from the command line

To see activation detail or expiry, open an elevated Command Prompt (Start > type cmd > Run as administrator):

slmgr.vbs /dli
slmgr.vbs /xpr

/dli shows license info; /xpr shows whether activation is permanent. To install a key (or change it via Settings instead at Activation > Change product key):

slmgr.vbs /ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
