Windows 11 Widgets Not Working, Blank, or Missing from the Taskbar? Turn Them On and Update the Pieces They Need

The Windows 11 widgets board won’t load (blank panel or endless spinner), or the widgets icon has disappeared from the left of the taskbar entirely.

Why: widgets are two separate things — the icon/entry point on the taskbar, and the web-powered board that draws weather, news, and other cards. The board is rendered with Microsoft Edge’s web engine (WebView2) and kept current by the Windows Web Experience Pack. So a missing icon is usually a taskbar toggle, while a blank board is almost always an out-of-date Web Experience Pack or Edge. Fix the entry point first, then the content.

Fix 1: Turn the Widgets icon back on

If the icon is gone, it’s just switched off on the taskbar.

1. Right-click an empty part of the taskbar → Taskbar settings (or open Settings and go to Personalization → Taskbar).
2. Under Taskbar items, set the Widgets toggle to On.

Even with the icon hidden, you can always open the board with Win + W — useful for testing whether the board itself works versus just the icon being off.

Fix 2: Restart, then open the board with Win + W

A blank board often clears with a fresh shell.

1. Save your work and restart the PC (a full restart, not just sign-out, reloads the web components).
2. Press Win + W to open the widgets board and give it a few seconds to populate.

Fix 3: Update the Windows Web Experience Pack

The board needs the latest Windows Web Experience Pack, which updates through the Microsoft Store.

1. Open the Microsoft Store → select Library (bottom-left).
2. In the search box, type Windows Web Experience Pack and select it.
3. If an Update button is shown, click it. (No button means you already have the current version.)
4. While you’re there, select your profile icon → Settings and make sure App updates is On so it stays current automatically.

Reopen the board with Win + W afterward.

Fix 4: Update Microsoft Edge

Widgets that show weather, sports, stocks, or calendar content require Microsoft Edge and its web runtime, so a stale Edge breaks the board.

1. Open Microsoft Edge → menu (…) → Settings → About Microsoft Edge.
2. Edge checks for and installs any update automatically; restart Edge if prompted.

Keeping Edge installed and updated is Microsoft’s stated requirement for Edge-dependent widgets to work.

Fix 5: Repair the WebView2 Runtime

If the board is still blank after updating, repair the web runtime that draws it.

1. Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
2. Search for Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime.
3. Select the … next to it → Modify → Repair.

Restart and try Win + W again.

FAQ

The icon is there but the board is empty / “Unable to load.” That’s a content problem, not a toggle. The board renders with Edge’s engine, so update the Windows Web Experience Pack (Fix 3) and Microsoft Edge (Fix 4), then repair WebView2 (Fix 5).

I don’t see “Windows Web Experience Pack” in the Store at all. Make sure you’re searching from the Library/search in the Microsoft Store and that the Store itself is signed in and updated. On a fully updated Windows 11 it’s preinstalled; if it’s genuinely absent, install it from the Store.

Do I need widgets enabled on the taskbar to use them? No. Even with the taskbar icon turned off (Fix 1), Win + W still opens the board — handy for confirming whether the problem is the icon or the content.
