No Audio Output Device Is Installed in Windows? Get the Device Detected Again

The volume icon shows a red X and hovering reads “No audio output device is installed” — sound settings are greyed out.

Why: Windows isn’t loading the audio device at all. The driver is missing, the device was disabled or hidden, or it didn’t re-detect after an update or driver change.

Fix 1: Re-enable or re-detect the device in Device Manager

Right-click Start → Device Manager.
Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
If your device is listed with a down arrow, right-click it → Enable device.
If nothing is listed, click View → Show hidden devices, then Action → Scan for hardware changes.

A disabled device shows up here even when the volume icon claims nothing is installed.

Fix 2: Reinstall the audio driver

If the device shows a warning mark or still won’t load, reinstall the driver:

In Device Manager, expand Sound, video and game controllers.
Right-click your audio device → Uninstall device (tick Attempt to remove the driver if offered) → confirm.
Restart your PC. Windows reinstalls a working driver on boot.

If the device is still missing after reboot, run Action → Scan for hardware changes again.

Fix 3: Install the latest driver from the maker

If Windows can’t supply a driver, get the official one:

Open Settings → Windows Update → Check for updates and install everything, then restart.
If sound is still missing, visit your PC or sound card maker’s support site, download the latest audio driver for your Windows version, install it, and restart.
