There are several built-in ways to take a screenshot in Windows 11 — the right one depends on whether you want to copy, snip a region, or save a file.

Why so many: each shortcut targets a different need. Here’s which to use and what happens to the image.

Method 1: Win + Shift + S — snip part of the screen (best for most people)

Press Win + Shift + S. The screen dims and the Snipping Tool toolbar appears at the top.
Choose a mode — Rectangle, Window, Full screen, or Freeform — then drag to select.
The snip is copied to your clipboard. Click the notification that pops up to open it in Snipping Tool, where you can annotate and save.

Method 2: PrtScn — copy the whole screen to the clipboard

Press Print Screen (PrtSc) to capture your entire screen to the clipboard. Nothing is saved to a file — paste it (Ctrl + V) into an email, document, or image editor.

If your laptop has no PrtScn key, use Fn + Win + Spacebar.

Method 3: Win + PrtScn — save a full-screen image to a file

Press Win + PrtScn. The screen dims briefly and a PNG of the full screen is saved automatically to This PC → Pictures → Screenshots. No pasting needed.

Method 4: Alt + PrtScn — copy just the active window

Press Alt + PrtScn to copy only the window you’re currently using to the clipboard, then paste it where you need it.
