Windows Hello Fingerprint or Face Not Working in Windows 11
Windows 11 used to sign you in with your fingerprint or face, and now it doesn’t recognize you — or the option is greyed out. Here’s how to get it working again.
Why: Biometric sign-in depends on a clean sensor, a current driver, and a stored enrollment that hasn’t been corrupted. A Windows update, a smudged reader, new glasses, or a stale driver can all break recognition. Re-registering fixes most cases.
Fix 1: Sign in with your PIN, then re-register
Whenever Hello won’t recognize you, fall back to your PIN or password first:
- At the sign-in screen, click Sign-in options and choose your PIN (or password) to reach the desktop.
- Open Settings → Accounts → Sign-in options.
For fingerprint: 3. Expand Fingerprint recognition (Windows Hello). 4. Make sure the reader is clean and dry, then click Add a finger and scan, capturing different angles of the same finger. 5. Register more than one finger so a single bad scan doesn’t lock you out.
For face: 3. Expand Facial recognition (Windows Hello). 4. Click Remove, then Set up, and re-scan your face. Sit centered, with even lighting and no harsh light from one side. 5. If you sometimes wear glasses, run Improve recognition and add a scan with them on.
Fix 2: Update the sensor / camera driver
An outdated or generic driver is the most common reason a working reader suddenly stops:
- Right-click Start → Device Manager.
- For fingerprint, expand Biometric devices; for face, expand Cameras (and look for an infrared camera).
- Right-click the device → Update driver → Search automatically for drivers.
- If nothing is found, get the latest driver from your laptop maker’s support page (Dell, HP, Lenovo, etc.), then restart and re-register in Sign-in options.

Fix 3: Clean the hardware and re-check the basics
If recognition is just unreliable rather than dead:
- Wipe the fingerprint reader and the camera lens — even a thin film of oil or dust hurts accuracy.
- For face: avoid backlighting (a bright window behind you), and re-scan if you’ve changed your facial hair, started/stopped wearing glasses, or added a hat.
- Make sure nothing covers the IR camera (privacy shutters, stickers).

The Windows Hello options are greyed out. That usually means the PIN isn’t set up — Hello biometrics require a PIN as the fallback. Set up PIN (Windows Hello) first, then the fingerprint/face options unlock.
It says my device doesn’t support Windows Hello. Face sign-in needs a Hello-compatible (infrared) camera and fingerprint needs an actual fingerprint reader. A standard webcam won’t do facial recognition.
