Microphone Not Working in Windows 11 or 10? Check Privacy, Device, Then Driver

Your microphone is plugged in, but apps can’t hear you or the input meter never moves.

Why: In Windows 11 and 10 the most common blocker is a privacy switch, not hardware — apps are simply denied access. After that it’s the wrong input device or a stalled driver.

Fix 1: Turn on microphone access in Privacy settings

1. Open Start → Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone.
2. Turn on Microphone access (the master switch).
3. Turn on Let apps access your microphone, then enable the specific app that needs it.
4. Scroll down and turn on Let desktop apps access your microphone — classic programs (Zoom, OBS, many games) need this one.

Fix 2: Set the correct input device

1. Settings → System → Sound.
2. Under Input, open Choose a device for speaking or recording and select your microphone.

Fix 3: Test the microphone

1. In Settings → System → Sound, click the arrow next to your input device to open its page.
2. Under Input settings, click Start test and speak normally.
3. Click Stop test, then Play to hear the recording. Raise the Input volume slider if it’s low.

A moving meter and audible playback confirm Windows hears the mic; the problem is then inside the app’s own settings.

Fix 4: Reinstall the microphone driver

1. Right-click Start → Device Manager.
2. Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
3. Right-click your audio device → Uninstall device (tick Attempt to remove the driver if offered) → confirm.
4. Restart your PC, then open Device Manager again and choose Action → Scan for hardware changes if needed.

The test works but Teams/Zoom still can’t hear me? Enable Let desktop apps access your microphone (Fix 1), then pick the same mic inside that app’s audio settings.

No microphone shows under Input at all? The device isn’t detected — reinstall the driver (Fix 4), and on a desktop confirm the mic is in the correct (usually pink) jack.
