Print Screen Key Not Working in Windows 11? Plus Where Your Screenshots Are Saved
You press Print Screen and nothing seems to happen — or it works, but you can’t find the file anywhere.
Why: the result depends on your Windows and Snipping Tool settings. PrtScn may open screen snipping or copy the whole screen; Win + PrtScn saves a full-screen capture, and current Snipping Tool can also automatically save snips.
What Print Screen actually does
- PrtScn opens screen snipping when Settings → Accessibility → Keyboard → Use the Print Screen key to open screen capture is enabled. If disabled, it normally copies the full screen to the clipboard; paste with Ctrl + V to use that copy.
- Alt + PrtScn copies only the active window to the clipboard.
- Win + PrtScn saves a full-screen PNG to a file automatically (see below).
If a snipping overlay appears or an image pastes, the key is responding. Check the chosen capture mode and save settings rather than assuming the key failed.
Fix 1: Use the shortcut that saves a file
Press Win + PrtScn. The screen dims for a moment to confirm the capture, and a PNG is saved automatically. Open File Explorer → This PC → Pictures → Screenshots to find it.
Fix 2: Use Win + Shift + S instead
If you only need part of the screen, press Win + Shift + S. The result is copied to the clipboard, and current Snipping Tool can automatically save it. Check Snipping Tool → Settings for automatic saving and its configured screenshot folder; click the notification to annotate or save manually.
Fix 3: No PrtScn key on your laptop?
Many compact and laptop keyboards drop the dedicated key. Use Fn + Win + Spacebar to take a screenshot, which is then available to print or paste.

FAQ
I press PrtScn but nothing pastes either. Try a different paste target (some apps reject images), and check that no screenshot utility or screen-recording app has hijacked the key. Win + Shift + S is a reliable alternative.
Can I find old screenshots I took with Win + PrtScn? Check Pictures → Screenshots, including the Pictures folder under OneDrive if it is redirected. Previously moved/deleted files and captures from another app may be elsewhere.
