Print Screen Key Not Working in Windows 11? Plus Where Your Screenshots Are Saved
You press Print Screen and nothing seems to happen — or it works, but you can’t find the file anywhere.
Why: this is usually not a broken key. Plain PrtScn doesn’t save a file — it copies the screen to the clipboard. The only shortcut that auto-saves a file is Win + PrtScn, and those files live in one specific folder.
What Print Screen actually does
- PrtScn copies your whole screen to the clipboard. There’s no file — you have to paste it (Ctrl + V) into a document, email, or image editor and save it from there.
- Alt + PrtScn copies only the active window to the clipboard.
- Win + PrtScn saves a full-screen PNG to a file automatically (see below).
If pasting works after PrtScn, your key is fine — you were just expecting a file that was never created.
Fix 1: Use the shortcut that saves a file
Press Win + PrtScn. The screen dims for a moment to confirm the capture, and a PNG is saved automatically. Open File Explorer → This PC → Pictures → Screenshots to find it.
Fix 2: Use Win + Shift + S instead
If you only need part of the screen, press Win + Shift + S to snip a region to the clipboard, then click the notification to open, annotate, and save it.
Fix 3: No PrtScn key on your laptop?
Many compact and laptop keyboards drop the dedicated key. Use Fn + Win + Spacebar to take a screenshot, which is then available to print or paste.
