Screen Flickering in Windows 11? Use the Task Manager Test to Find the Cause First

Your Windows screen keeps flickering, flashing, or scrambling.

Why: Microsoft narrows this to two causes — a display driver or an incompatible app — and there’s a one-minute test that tells you which. Diagnose first, then you only do the fix that applies.

Fix 1: Run the Task Manager flicker test

This tells you whether to chase the driver or an app.

1. Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete and open Task Manager (or press Ctrl + Shift + Esc).
2. Watch the screen while everything is visible:
   • If Task Manager flickers along with everything else, “a display driver is probably causing the problem” — go to Fix 2.
   • If Task Manager does not flicker while the rest of the screen does, “an incompatible app is probably causing the problem” — go to Fix 3.

Fix 2: Roll back, update, or reinstall the display driver

If the whole screen (including Task Manager) flickers:

1. Open Device Manager (search it from the taskbar) and expand Display adapters.
2. If it started after a Windows/driver update — roll back: right-click the adapter > Properties > Driver tab > Roll Back Driver > Yes, then restart.
3. If Roll Back is greyed out — update: right-click the adapter > Update driver. (Getting the latest driver direct from Intel/AMD/NVIDIA is often more current than Windows Update.)
4. If neither helps — reinstall: right-click the adapter > Properties > Driver tab > Uninstall Device, tick the option to remove the driver, confirm, then restart. “Windows will attempt to reinstall the driver.”

Fix 3: Uninstall the incompatible app

If Task Manager stays steady while the rest of the screen flickers, an app is to blame (older antivirus, display/utility tools, and some cloud apps are common culprits).

1. Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
2. Find the suspect app — start with anything installed or updated right before the flickering began.
3. Select it, then choose Uninstall > Uninstall, and restart.

Check the maker’s site for a newer, compatible version before reinstalling.

FAQ

The screen flickers only at the login screen, then stops. That still points to the display driver (Fix 2). Boot into Safe Mode if you can’t reach Device Manager normally.
