"We Can't Sign You In" After a Password Change in Windows 11

You reset or changed your Microsoft account password, and now the Windows 11 sign-in screen rejects it — or shows “We can’t sign you in.” Here’s how to get back in, easiest first.

Why: When you change a Microsoft account password on another device or the web, your PC only learns the new one once it’s online and able to reach Microsoft. Until then it still expects the old password — so the “correct” password looks wrong.

Fix 1: Check the obvious, then try the password again

  1. Make sure Caps Lock and Num Lock are in the right state — click the eye icon in the password box to reveal what you’re typing.
  2. Click Sign-in options and confirm you’re using the password key, not a PIN.
  3. Try once more, carefully.

Fix 2: Connect to the internet so the new password syncs

This is the usual fix when a just-changed Microsoft account password is rejected:

  1. On the lock screen, click the network icon in the bottom-right corner.
  2. Connect to Wi-Fi (enter the network password if asked). On a desktop, plug in Ethernet instead.
  3. Wait a few seconds, then type your new password. Once the PC reaches Microsoft, the new password is accepted.

If you can’t get online at the lock screen, use a wired connection or move within range of a known Wi-Fi network you’ve used before.

Fix 3: Sign in with the OLD password (offline)

If the PC still can’t get online, it may still accept the previous password, because that’s the last one it cached:

  1. Type the password you used before the change.
  2. Once you’re at the desktop, connect to the internet so Windows syncs the new password in the background.
  3. From then on, the new password works.

Fix 4: Reset the Microsoft account password online

If neither password works, reset it fresh from another device:

  1. On a phone or another computer, go to account.microsoft.com and reset your password.
  2. Back at the locked PC, connect to the internet (Fix 2) and sign in with the brand-new password.

If it’s a local account that’s failing, the online reset doesn’t apply — see reset a forgotten local account password.

Fix 5: If the desktop loads but everything looks reset

Signing in but landing on a blank, default desktop means Windows loaded a temporary profile, not your real one — that’s a different problem. Restart the PC (often more than once) and sign in again; full steps are in fix the temporary profile sign-in.

FAQ

Windows says the password is correct on my phone but wrong on the PC. The PC is offline and still holds the old password. Connect it to the internet (Fix 2) and the new one will be accepted.

I have no internet and don’t remember the old password. Reset the password online from another device (Fix 4), then get the PC online to sign in — there’s no offline way around a changed Microsoft password.

Could it be a keyboard issue? Yes. A wrong keyboard layout can turn correct keystrokes into the wrong characters. Use the reveal eye icon to check, and confirm the layout shown near the sign-in box.
