App Not Installed Error on Android? Here's How to Fix It

Updated Sources linked 3 min read October 3, 2026 · by Ryan Bennett

You tap Install and instead of the app appearing, Android flashes “App not installed” (or “App not installed as package appears to be invalid”).

Why: This usually comes down to one of a few things: not enough free storage, a corrupted Play Store cache, a wrong date/time that breaks the secure connection to Google’s servers, or — if you’re side-loading an APK — a file that conflicts with a version already on the phone. Work through these fastest-first.

Settings paths vary by manufacturer (Samsung One UI, Pixel, Motorola). The wording below follows Google’s generic Android and Pixel docs; Samsung equivalents are noted.

Fix 1: Free up storage and restart

Low storage is the most common cause of a failed install.

  1. Open Settings > Storage and check free space. Google notes installs can fail with less than 1 GB free. If you’re tight, delete some photos, videos, or unused apps.
  2. Press and hold the Power button, then tap Restart (or Power off and turn it back on).
  3. Reopen the Play Store and try the install again.

Fix 2: Check the date and time

A wrong clock makes Google’s servers reject the secure connection, which can stop an install partway through.

  1. Open Settings > System > Date & time (Samsung: Settings > General management > Date and time).
  2. Turn on Set time automatically and Set time zone automatically.

If they were already on, toggle them off and back on to force a re-sync, then wait a minute and retry.

Fix 3: Clear the Play Store cache

A corrupted Play Store cache routinely breaks installs.

  1. Open Settings > Apps (or Apps & notifications > See all apps) and tap Google Play Store.
  2. Tap Storage & cache > Clear cache.
  3. Reopen the Play Store and retry.

If it still fails, return to the same screen and tap Clear storage (this resets the Store to defaults but does not remove your installed apps), then open the Store and sign in if prompted.

Fix 4: If you’re side-loading an APK

If the error appears when installing a downloaded APK rather than from the Play Store:

  • Check whether a copy of the same app is already installed. An ordinary update from the same trusted publisher should not need an uninstall; a different signing identity can block an update. Confirm the APK came from the publisher you intended to trust and that it is the correct version before replacing an existing app.
  • Before uninstalling, export or back up important local app data and confirm you can restore it. Uninstalling removes app-specific files and settings; installing the replacement does not automatically recover them. If the app has unsynced data you cannot preserve, keep the existing app and contact its publisher instead. Only uninstall when a fresh installation is intended and you accept that loss.
  • Confirm the APK matches your phone (the right Android version and processor). An incompatible build will refuse to install.
  • Whenever possible, install from the Play Store instead, which delivers the correct build for your device automatically.

FAQ

It only happens with one specific app. That app may not be compatible with your device, Android version, or region. If everything else installs fine, the problem is that app, not your phone.

Will clearing Play Store storage delete my apps? No. It resets the Store app itself; your installed apps stay put.
