iPhone Wi-Fi Greyed Out or Won't Turn On? Here's the Fix

Published ✓ Verified ⏱️ 2 min read June 30, 2025 · by Ryan Bennett

The Wi-Fi switch in Settings is dimmed (greyed out) and won’t turn on, or Wi-Fi is on but won’t connect to any network.

Why: A greyed-out Wi-Fi toggle is usually a temporary software hiccup that a restart clears. If it stays stuck, the cause is more often a VPN or security app, or corrupted network settings, than a hardware fault. Work through these in order.

Fix 1: Restart your iPhone

This is Apple’s first step for a dimmed Wi-Fi toggle, and it fixes it most of the time.

  1. Power your iPhone off completely.
  2. Wait a few seconds, then power it back on.
  3. Go to Settings > Wi-Fi and try the switch again.

Fix 2: Make sure Airplane Mode is off

Airplane Mode disables Wi-Fi, which can make the toggle look unavailable.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Confirm Airplane Mode is off.
  3. Go back to Settings > Wi-Fi and turn Wi-Fi on — look for a blue checkmark next to your network.

Fix 3: Remove VPN or security apps

VPN and third-party security apps can take over networking and block Wi-Fi. Disabling them isn’t enough — Apple says to delete them:

  1. Uninstall any VPN or security app you’ve installed.
  2. Restart your iPhone.
  3. Test Wi-Fi again. (You can reinstall the app afterward if you still want it.)

Fix 4: Reset network settings

If Wi-Fi is still stuck, reset the network configuration. This erases saved Wi-Fi passwords and cellular, VPN, and APN settings:

  1. Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset.
  2. Tap Reset Network Settings.

If Wi-Fi still won’t turn on after a reset, the hardware may need service — contact Apple.

FAQ

Wi-Fi turns on but I still can’t connect to my network. Make sure your router is on and you’re in range, restart the router (unplug it, wait, plug it back in), and confirm you’re entering the right password. If your router supports it, try the 5 GHz band instead of 2.4 GHz.

Should I turn off Wi-Fi Assist? Wi-Fi Assist (in Settings > Cellular) doesn’t affect the toggle, but turning it off prevents your iPhone from quietly switching to cellular when Wi-Fi is weak.
