Can't Add or Sign In to a Google Account on Android? How to Fix It

You try to add or sign in to a Google account on your Android phone and it fails, hangs on a spinner, or shows a “can’t sign in” / “couldn’t connect” error.

Why: Almost always it’s one of three things: no working internet at that moment, a wrong system clock (which breaks the secure handshake with Google), or stale Google Play services data. These fixes go fastest-first.

Settings paths vary by maker (Samsung One UI vs Pixel). Wording below follows Google’s generic Android docs.

Fix 1: Confirm you’re online and restart

Adding an account requires a live connection, and a quick restart clears most temporary glitches.

  1. Open a website in your browser to confirm internet works. If it doesn’t, fix Wi-Fi or mobile data first.
  2. Toggle airplane mode: Settings > Network & internet (Samsung: Connections) > Airplane mode on, wait 10 seconds, then off.
  3. Restart the phone (Power > Restart), then try adding the account again.

Fix 2: Fix the date, time, and time zone

If your clock is wrong, Google’s servers reject the login because the security check fails. This is the single most common cause of “can’t sign in.”

  1. Open Settings > System > Date & time (Samsung: General management > Date and time).
  2. Turn on Set time automatically (or Automatic date & time) and Set time zone automatically.
  3. If they’re already on, turn them off and on again so the phone re-syncs. Then retry the account.

Fix 3: Add the account the right way

Use the proper Accounts path so the phone runs a full sign-in.

  1. Open Settings > Passwords & accounts (older devices: Accounts or Users & accounts).
  2. Tap Add account > Google.
  3. Enter your email and password, complete any 2-Step Verification prompt, and accept the terms. Enter your phone’s PIN or pattern if asked.

When you sign in, your email, contacts and calendar sync to the device automatically.

Fix 4: Clear Google Play services, then retry

Stale Play services data blocks new sign-ins. Clearing it gives the account system a fresh start.

  1. Settings > Apps > See all apps > Google Play services.
  2. Tap Storage & cache > Clear cache.
  3. If that doesn’t help, tap Clear storage > Clear all data > Delete (this can remove saved Google Pay cards and passwords from the device — you’ll re-add them).
  4. Restart and add the account again.

FAQ

It says my username or password is wrong, but I’m sure it’s right. Reset your password at accounts.google.com from any device, then sign in on the phone with the new password.

The screen is stuck on “Add phone number” or a verification step. That’s a 2-Step Verification prompt — approve it on your other signed-in device, or use a backup code. You can’t skip past it.

Will clearing Play services data sign me out of my other accounts? It can sign you out of Google apps and remove saved Google Pay items, but it won’t delete the accounts themselves — they re-sync after you restart.
