App Stuck on "Waiting" or Won't Download on iPhone? Here's the Fix
An app on your Home Screen is greyed out and stuck on “Waiting…”, or it just spins and never finishes downloading or updating.
Why: The download has stalled in a queue, the request got stuck, or — very often — there’s a problem with the payment method on your Apple Account, which can block even free apps from installing.
Fix 1: Tap the app, or prioritize the download
The fastest thing to try first:
- Tap the greyed-out app icon once to pause the download, then tap it again to resume.
- If it’s still stuck, touch and hold the app on the Home Screen, then choose Prioritize Download from the menu that appears.
This pushes that app to the front of the download queue.
Fix 2: Restart your iPhone
A simple restart clears a stuck download more often than you’d expect.
- Turn your iPhone off, wait a few seconds, and turn it back on.
- Open the App Store or check the Home Screen — the download usually completes on its own.
Fix 3: Update the app manually from the App Store
If an update won’t go through:
- Open the App Store and tap your account photo in the top corner.
- Scroll to the list of pending updates and tap Update next to the app (or Update All).
Fix 4: Fix your payment method
Apple is explicit here: you might need a valid payment method on file, even for a free app. A declined or expired card is a leading cause of stuck downloads.
- Open the App Store and tap your account photo.
- Tap your name at the top, then Payment & Shipping (you may be asked to sign in).
- Update or re-enter your card details, save, and try the download again.
- If there’s a billing problem or an unpaid balance, resolve it here — downloads stay stuck until it’s cleared.
FAQ
It won’t connect to the App Store at all. That’s a connection problem, not a stuck download — see Cannot connect to the App Store.
Why does a free app need a payment method? Apple requires a valid payment method on the account for some downloads even when the app itself is free. Adding a card usually unblocks it.
The app asks me to confirm my age. In some regions Apple requires you to confirm you’re old enough before certain apps will download — follow the prompt to continue.
