iOS Update Stuck or "Unable to Verify Update"? Delete It and Retry (Right Order)

Your iPhone or iPad sits on “Verifying Update…” forever, or shows “Unable to Verify Update — iOS [version] failed verification because you are no longer connected to the internet” even though Wi-Fi is fine.

Why: The downloaded update file is incomplete or corrupted, or the device briefly lost its connection to Apple’s update servers during verification. Deleting the partial download and starting over fixes the large majority of cases. Don’t reset anything — work in this order.

Fix 1: Force restart, then check Wi-Fi

1. Force restart (no data is lost). On iPhone 8 and later: press and release Volume Up, press and release Volume Down, then hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears. (Other models: see iPhone won’t turn on / force restart by model.)
2. Confirm you’re on a stable network at Settings > Wi-Fi. If you’re on a captive/public network, switch to a home network.
3. Keep the device plugged into power, then try Settings > General > Software Update again.

Fix 2: Delete the update file and re-download it

This is the key fix for “Unable to Verify Update.”

1. Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage (on iPad: iPad Storage).
2. Scroll the app list to find the iOS update (it’s named like iOS [version]).
3. Tap it, then tap Delete Update.
4. Go back to Settings > General > Software Update and let it download fresh, then install.

Fix 3: Make sure there’s enough free space

A failed install is often a space problem in disguise.

1. In Settings > General > iPhone Storage, check the bar at the top.

3. Retry the update.

Fix 4: Update through a computer

If over-the-air keeps failing, update via Finder or iTunes — it downloads a complete image directly from Apple.

1. Mac (macOS Catalina or later): open Finder. Mac (older) or Windows PC: open the latest iTunes.
2. Connect the iPhone/iPad with a cable and select it.
3. Click General (Finder) or Summary (iTunes), then Check for Update > Download and Update. This route bypasses the on-device verification step that was failing.

Is it safe to delete the update file? Yes — you’re only deleting the downloaded installer, not iOS or your data. It re-downloads cleanly.

It says “An error occurred installing iOS.” Try Fix 2 (delete + re-download); if it repeats, use Fix 4 (computer) which gives clearer error handling.

How long should “Verifying” take? Usually under a minute or two. If it’s stuck well past that, force restart (Fix 1) and then delete/re-download (Fix 2).
