iCloud Photos Not Syncing or Uploading? How to Get It Working Again
Photos you take on one device aren’t appearing on your others, or the Photos app shows uploads stuck partway.
Why: iCloud Photos keeps one library in sync across every device signed in to the same Apple Account. Syncing pauses for ordinary reasons — low battery, a poor connection, full storage, or the device cooling itself down — far more often than it actually breaks. The trick is to read the status message at the bottom of the Photos app, which tells you exactly why it stopped.
Fix 1: Confirm iCloud Photos is on, with the same Apple Account
All your devices need iCloud Photos turned on under the same account.
- iPhone or iPad: Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Photos, and turn on Sync this iPhone (older iOS: iCloud Photos).
- Mac: open the Photos app, then Photos > Settings > iCloud and tick iCloud Photos.
Then check Settings > [your name] (and System Settings > [your name] on Mac) to be sure both devices show the same Apple Account email. Two different accounts is the most common reason photos “won’t sync.”
Fix 2: Read the status at the bottom of the Photos app
This is the step most people skip — and it usually names the problem.
- iPhone or iPad: open Photos, tap the profile button in the corner (older iOS: scroll to the very bottom of your library). Look for a status line under the photo count.
- Mac: open Photos, click Library, then scroll to the bottom of All Photos.
Common messages and what to do:
- Low Battery — syncing pauses below 20%. Charge the device.
- [Device] Needs to Cool Down — it paused to prevent overheating. Wait a few minutes, or tap Sync Now if offered.
- Poor Network Connection / Optimizing — move to stronger Wi-Fi; tap Sync Now or just wait.
- Low Power Mode / Low Data Mode — turn these off in Settings to let syncing resume.
- iCloud storage is full — you’ve hit your limit; free up or upgrade iCloud storage.
Fix 3: Let it sync on power and Wi-Fi overnight
Large libraries can take a long time on the first upload. Connect the device to power and Wi-Fi, leave the screen locked, and let it run overnight. Don’t turn iCloud Photos off while you wait — that only restarts the process.
Fix 4: Fix an “Unable to Upload” album
If a few items refuse to sync, Photos collects them in an Unable to Upload album and shows “Couldn’t Sync [number] to iCloud.”
- Open the Unable to Upload album.
- Export or save those items somewhere safe (for example, Share > Save to Files, or drag them out on a Mac).
- Delete the originals from the album, then re-import the saved copies so they upload as fresh items.
FAQ
Why are my photos on my iPhone but not my Mac? Almost always a different Apple Account, or iCloud Photos turned off on one device. Confirm both in Fix 1.
I turned off “Optimize Storage” — where are my full-resolution photos? Choosing Download and Keep Originals pulls full-size copies down; it can take a while and needs free space on the device.
Does iCloud Photos sync over cellular? It can, but it’s mainly designed for Wi-Fi. Check your cellular setting in Settings > Photos if uploads stall away from Wi-Fi.
