iPad Magic Keyboard or Smart Keyboard Not Working? Connection Fixes That Work

Published ✓ Verified ⏱️ 2 min read December 21, 2025 · by Ryan Bennett

Your iPad won’t respond to its attached Magic Keyboard, Magic Keyboard Folio, Smart Keyboard, or Smart Keyboard Folio.

Why: These keyboards connect through the Smart Connector — three small magnetic contacts — not Bluetooth, so there’s no pairing. When typing stops, it’s usually dirty or misaligned contacts, a case blocking the connection, or an iPadOS version that’s too old for your keyboard.

Fix 1: Confirm compatibility and update iPadOS

  1. Make sure your iPad and keyboard are actually compatible — not every keyboard fits every iPad. Check Apple’s iPad keyboards compatibility list for your exact model.
  2. Update iPadOS: Settings → General → Software Update, then install anything available.
    • The Magic Keyboard for iPad Air requires iPadOS 18.3 or later.
    • Other Magic Keyboard models require iPadOS 14.5 or later.

An out-of-date iPadOS is a common reason a brand-new keyboard won’t type.

Fix 2: Clean the Smart Connector and remove other cases

The Smart Connector is the set of three small magnetic contacts on the back or edge of your iPad that line up with matching contacts on the keyboard.

  1. Detach the keyboard from the iPad.
  2. With a soft, lint-free cloth, wipe the Smart Connector contacts on both the keyboard and the iPad. Smudges, dust, or residue here break the connection.
  3. Remove any other case or cover you’ve added — a second case can hold the iPad slightly off the contacts so they never touch. Use only the keyboard case by itself.
  4. Reattach the iPad firmly so the contacts line up and snap into place.

Fix 3: Restart the iPad

If the keyboard still doesn’t respond after reconnecting:

  1. Restart your iPad (Settings → General → Shut Down, slide to power off, then turn it back on).
  2. Reattach the keyboard once the iPad is back up and try typing.

If it still won’t connect, or the keys work but something else is wrong (stuck keys, trackpad not responding), the keyboard or iPad may need service — contact Apple Support.

FAQ

Do I need to pair this keyboard over Bluetooth? No. Magic Keyboard, Smart Keyboard, and the Folio versions connect through the Smart Connector contacts, so there’s no Bluetooth pairing step.

The keyboard works but the trackpad doesn’t. Make sure iPadOS is up to date (trackpad support needs iPadOS 13.4 or later), then restart the iPad. If it still doesn’t respond, the keyboard may need service.

Only some keys type. Clean the Smart Connector contacts and reseat the iPad first. Persistent stuck or dead keys point to a hardware issue with the keyboard.
