Cannot Connect to the App Store on iPhone? Here's the Fix
The App Store (or iTunes Store, or another Apple service) won’t load on your iPhone and you see an error like “Cannot connect to App Store.”
Why: Most of the time this isn’t your phone at all — it’s either a temporary Apple service outage, or your iPhone simply isn’t reaching the internet. Apple’s own troubleshooting starts with those two checks before anything fancier.
Fix 1: Check for an Apple outage
Before changing any settings, rule out a problem on Apple’s end:
- Open Safari and go to apple.com/support/systemstatus (Apple’s System Status page).
- Look for App Store in the list. A green dot means it’s running normally; a yellow or red marker means Apple is having an issue.
If App Store shows a problem, there’s nothing to fix on your phone — wait and try again later.
Fix 2: Confirm your internet actually works
The App Store needs a working connection. Apple says to test it directly:
- Open Safari and load any normal website (like a news site).
- If pages won’t load on Wi-Fi, the problem is your network. Turn your Wi-Fi router off, wait, then on to reset it.
- If you’re on cellular, make sure the App Store is allowed to use it: Settings > Cellular, scroll down, and confirm Cellular Data is on (and turned on for the App Store).
- VPNs and third-party security apps can block Apple services — turn yours off temporarily and try again.
Fix 3: Check your date and time
A wrong date or time makes Apple’s servers reject the secure connection — a surprisingly common cause.
- Go to Settings > General > Date & Time.
- Turn on Set Automatically.
Fix 4: Update iOS
An out-of-date iPhone can fail to connect to current Apple services.
- Go to Settings > General > Software Update.
- Install any update that’s offered, then open the App Store again.
If you’ve done all four and still can’t connect, Apple’s advice is simply to try again later, or to try a different network to confirm whether the issue follows your phone or your Wi-Fi.
FAQ
The store loads but an app won’t download or is stuck on “Waiting.” That’s a different problem — see App stuck on “Waiting” or won’t download.
It says my Apple Account is disabled. That’s an account lock, not a connection issue — see Apple Account disabled or locked.
Do I need to reset network settings? Only as a last resort, and only after the steps above. It erases all saved Wi-Fi passwords and VPN settings: Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
