Android Storage Full? Clear App Cache and Free Up Space (Step by Step)

Your Android phone shows a “Storage full” or “Storage space running out” warning, apps won’t update, the camera won’t save photos, or the Play Store refuses to download.

Why: Phones fill up with app caches (temporary files), downloads, photos and videos, and the apps themselves. Android starts misbehaving when free space drops low — Google notes a device can have problems when less than 10% of storage is free. The good news: most of that space is recoverable without deleting anything you care about.

Settings paths vary by manufacturer. The menus below use Google’s generic Pixel/Android wording — on Samsung (One UI), Motorola or Xiaomi the labels differ slightly, but the same options exist.

Fix 1: Clear the cache on your biggest apps

Cached files are temporary data apps store to load faster. Clearing them deletes nothing you’ll miss — apps just rebuild it (they may open a touch slower the first time).

1. Open Settings > Apps (on some phones: Settings > Apps & notifications > See all apps).
2. Tap a heavy app — browsers, social media and streaming apps are the usual culprits (Chrome, Instagram, Spotify, YouTube).
3. Tap Storage & cache (or Storage).
4. Tap Clear cache.

Repeat for your top few apps. Do not tap Clear storage / Clear data unless you’re prepared to sign in again and lose in-app settings — that wipes the app’s data, not just the cache.

Worked example: A 2 GB Instagram cache and a 1.5 GB Chrome cache can free over 3 GB in two taps each — often enough to get the camera and updates working again immediately.

Fix 2: Use Files by Google to clear junk

The Files app surfaces the safe-to-delete stuff automatically.

1. Open Files by Google (pre-installed on Pixel and many phones; free on the Play Store otherwise).
2. Tap Clean (bottom).
3. Review the suggestion cards — Junk files, Duplicates, Large files, Downloaded files, Memes/screenshots.
4. Tap Confirm and free up on the categories you want to clear.

This is the fastest way to find the multi-gigabyte movie you forgot you downloaded or hundreds of old screenshots.

Fix 3: Archive apps you rarely use

Archiving frees up to ~60% of an app’s size while keeping its icon and your data. When you tap it again, it re-downloads and picks up where you left off. (Requires a recent Android version.)

1. Open the Play Store > tap your profile photo > Settings > General.
2. Turn on Automatically archive apps.

Android will now archive apps you don’t use whenever you’re low on space — no manual cleanup needed.

Fix 4: Offload photos and videos

Photos and 4K video are usually the single biggest space hog.

• Back up to Google Photos, then in Photos tap your profile photo > Free up space on this device to remove copies that are already backed up.
• Or move files to a computer with a USB cable, then delete them from the phone.

FAQ

Does clearing cache delete my photos or logins? No. Clearing cache only removes temporary files. Clear storage / Clear data is the one that signs you out and deletes app data — avoid it unless you mean to.

Cleared cache but it filled up again. That’s normal — caches rebuild as you use apps. For a lasting fix, offload photos (Fix 4) and turn on auto-archiving (Fix 3).

Phone has no Files by Google and a different storage menu. Samsung, Xiaomi and others have their own cleanup tools (e.g. Samsung’s Device care > Storage). The cache-clearing steps in Fix 1 still apply everywhere.
