iPhone Camera Black Screen or Not Working? How to Fix It

You open the Camera app and get a black screen, a frozen preview, or the camera won’t flip between front and back. Here’s how to get it working.

Why: Most camera black screens aren’t hardware — they’re a stuck app, an outdated iOS version, or something physically blocking the lens. Walk through these in order; the first two fix the large majority of cases.

Fix 1: Force-close the Camera app and reopen it

A frozen or black preview usually means the Camera app got stuck while loading the sensor.

1. Swipe up from the bottom edge and pause in the middle to open the App Switcher (on a Face ID iPhone). On a Home-button iPhone, double-press the Home button.
2. Find the Camera card and swipe it up to close it.
3. Wait a couple of seconds, then reopen Camera.

While you’re in Camera, tap the rotate button (the circular arrows) to switch between the front and rear camera. If one side shows a picture and the other is black, that points to one specific camera module rather than the whole app — note which one for later.

Fix 2: Remove the case and clean the lens

Apple’s first recommendation is to rule out anything physical:

1. Remove any case, film, or accessory — such as a polarizer, extender, magnifier, or magnetic mount — that might block the camera or flash.
2. If the image is blurry rather than black, clean the front and back camera lenses with a microfiber cloth.

Magnetic lens attachments and metallic cases can also interfere with the camera, so take those off while you test.

Fix 3: Restart your iPhone and update iOS

If the app is fine and nothing is blocking the lens, restart clears stuck processes:

1. Restart your iPhone (power off, wait, power back on).
2. Open Camera and test again with both the front and rear cameras.

Then make sure you’re current:

1. Open Settings → General → Software Update.
2. Install any available update — Apple regularly fixes camera bugs in iOS point releases.

Fix 4: Check the flash separately

If photos work but the flash doesn’t fire:

1. Open Control Center and tap the Flashlight button to test the LED directly.
2. In the Camera app, tap the flash button and set it to On instead of Auto, then take a photo.

If the flashlight won’t turn on at all, that’s the same LED the camera uses — note it for service.
