iPad Won't Charge or Charges Slowly? Cable, Port, and Force Restart Checks
Your iPad shows no charging indicator when plugged in, or it charges much slower than usual.
Why: Charging problems are almost always the cable, the adapter, the power source, a blocked charging port, or a temperature limit — not the battery itself. A “Slow Charger” message means your charger can’t deliver enough power for fast charging. Work through the physical checks first, then force restart if the battery seems stuck.
Keep a wet or visibly damaged charging port or cable unplugged. Do not force a connector into the port, scrape it with a tool, or use compressed air. If the port is obstructed or damaged, contact Apple or an authorized service provider.
Fix 1: Confirm it’s actually charging, then swap the cable and adapter
When your iPad is charging you’ll see a lightning bolt on the battery icon in the status bar, or a large battery icon on the Lock Screen. If you don’t:
- Plug your iPad into a USB power adapter (a wall adapter, not just a computer or hub USB port) using the cable that came with your iPad.
- If nothing happens, try a different cable and a different adapter — a frayed cable or weak adapter is the single most common cause.
- Try a different wall outlet to rule out the power source.
- Leave it connected and give it a few minutes — a deeply drained iPad can take a while before any icon appears.
Fix 2: Inspect the charging port and check temperature
A blocked port or an overheated iPad will refuse to charge or will charge slowly.
- Disconnect the cable and inspect the port with a light. Debris can stop the connector from fitting, but do not insert a toothpick or another tool into the port.
- If debris remains lodged, ask Apple or an authorized service provider to inspect it. A matching connector should fit with reasonable ease; do not force it. If the cable’s exposed Lightning connector is dirty, clean that connector with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth, following Apple’s handling guidance. Keep moisture out of the iPad’s openings.
- Make sure your iPad isn’t too hot or too cold — keep it within normal operating temperatures. A hot iPad (after gaming, or left in a car or sun) will slow or pause charging to protect the battery. Move it somewhere cooler and try again.
Fix 3: Force restart if the battery seems stuck
If it still won’t charge, a force restart often clears a frozen charging state. It erases nothing.
iPad without a Home button (Face ID / Touch ID in the top button):
- Press and quickly release the volume button closest to the top button.
- Press and quickly release the volume button farthest from the top button.
- Press and hold the top button until your iPad restarts.
iPad with a Home button:
- Press and hold both the Home button and the top (or side) button until you see the Apple logo.
Leave it on the charger afterward and watch for the charging icon.
FAQ
Why do I see a “Slow Charger” message? Your iPad supports faster charging than the charger you’ve plugged in can deliver. A wired charger that provides 7.5 watts or less will charge slowly. Switch to a higher-wattage USB power adapter for faster charging.
Is it bad to use a low-wattage charger? No — it just charges more slowly. It won’t damage your iPad.
Nothing works after all of this. If your iPad still won’t charge with a known-good cable, adapter, and clean port, the hardware may need service. Contact Apple Support.
