Samsung Galaxy Black Screen or Frozen? Force Restart With Volume Down + Side

Your Samsung Galaxy phone is stuck on a black screen, the display is frozen, or it won’t respond when you press the Side button.

Why: Most of the time the phone isn’t dead — the system has locked up. A force restart reboots the hardware even when the touchscreen is completely unresponsive, and it does not erase any of your data. If the screen stays dark with no logo, the issue may instead be a flat or non-charging battery.

Button names vary slightly by model. On most current Galaxy phones the power button is called the Side button (older models call it the Power button). The combo is the same: Volume Down plus that button.

Fix 1: Force restart (Volume Down + Side button)

This is the fix for a frozen or black-but-on phone. It will not delete anything.

1. Press and hold Volume Down + the Side button at the same time.
2. Keep holding until the screen goes black and the Samsung logo appears — this usually takes about 7 seconds, occasionally up to a full minute on a deeply hung device.
3. Release both buttons and let the phone finish booting.

If nothing happens after a full 60 seconds of holding, move on to Fix 2 — the battery may simply be empty.

Fix 2: Plug it in and charge for at least an hour

If the screen is truly black with no logo and no reaction to the force-restart combo, the battery may be fully drained.

1. Plug the phone into an official Samsung charger in a working wall outlet (not a laptop USB port).
2. Leave it charging for at least an hour. A fully depleted battery can take up to 10 minutes before the charging icon even appears, so don’t give up early.
3. Once you see the battery indicator, try the Volume Down + Side force restart again.

Fix 3: Restart from the menu (if the screen does respond)

If the screen reacts but the phone is sluggish, a normal restart is gentler.

1. Press and hold Volume Down + the Side button for a moment until the menu appears.
2. Tap Restart, then tap Restart again to confirm.
3. To prevent future freezes, set up scheduled reboots in Settings → Battery and device care → Auto optimization → Restart automatically (wording varies by One UI version).

FAQ

Will a force restart erase my photos or apps? No. A force restart is just a hardware reboot — it’s the equivalent of pulling and reinserting the battery. Your data, apps and settings are untouched. (A factory reset is the one that erases everything; that’s a separate action.)

The Samsung logo appears then it loops or dies. That’s a boot loop, not a frozen screen. Charge it fully first, then if it keeps looping it likely needs Samsung service.

Which button is the “Side” button? It’s the power button on the right edge. Some older Galaxy models label it “Power” and a few had a separate Bixby key — the force-restart combo is still Volume Down + the power/Side button.
