iPhone "Storage Almost Full"? How to Free Space Without Deleting Photos

Your iPhone keeps popping up “Storage Almost Full”, and you can’t take photos, install apps, or download an update.

Why: Photos and videos, app caches, old Messages attachments, and downloaded media fill the drive over time. The fastest wins come from seeing exactly what’s using space, then offloading apps (which keeps your data) and moving photos to iCloud — not deleting everything.

Fix 1: See what’s using space, then act on the recommendations

1. Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage (on iPad: Settings > General > iPad Storage).
2. The bar at the top shows space used by content type (Apps, Photos, Media, Mail). Below it is a list of apps sorted by how much space each one uses.
3. At the top you’ll see personalized Recommendations. Tap Show All to see them, then tap Enable next to the ones you want, such as Review Downloaded Videos or Review Large Attachments.

Worked example: tap a heavy app (say Podcasts at 4 GB). You’ll see three options:

• Offload App — frees the app’s space but keeps its documents and data, so reinstalling restores everything.
• Delete App — removes the app and its related data.
• Delete some content (for certain apps) — clears downloads inside the app while keeping the app.

Fix 2: Turn on Offload Unused Apps

This automatically removes apps you don’t use while keeping their data, and reinstalls them when you tap them again.

1. Go to Settings > Apps > App Store.
2. Turn on Offload Unused Apps.

The app icons stay on your Home Screen with a small download cloud; tapping one redownloads it (you need Wi-Fi or cellular).

Fix 3: Move full-resolution photos to iCloud

Photos and videos are usually the biggest single user of space.

1. Go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Photos.
2. Turn on Sync this iPhone, then choose Optimize iPhone Storage.

Full-resolution originals are kept in iCloud, and smaller space-saving copies stay on your device. Note that anything beyond the free 5 GB iCloud allowance needs an iCloud+ plan.

Fix 4: Clear Messages attachments and old conversations

1. In Settings > General > iPhone Storage, tap Messages.
2. Under Documents, review Photos, Videos, and GIFs and Stickers, then delete large items you don’t need.
