How to Move Apps to an SD Card on Android

If your phone’s storage is full, an SD card can give apps somewhere else to live — but only if you set the card up the right way.

Why: App storage on an SD card depends on the phone and the app. Google’s generic Android route uses adoptable/internal storage, where offered. Some Samsung Galaxy phones also let eligible apps move to an SD card through the app’s Storage > Change menu, without adopting the card. Check that option before formatting anything.

Fix 1: Check for a supported per-app move (Samsung Galaxy)

Insert a compatible SD card and confirm the phone recognizes it.
Open Settings > Apps, choose the app, then open Storage.
If Change appears, choose SD card, then Move and wait for completion.
If Change is missing, that app or model may not support the move. Do not force it by reformatting the card.

Not every app supports SD-card storage, and some of its data may stay internally because the app needs it there. Leave the card installed while using apps stored on it.

Fix 2: Use adoptable storage only if your phone offers it

On devices that support Google’s internal-storage route, the card can become part of the phone’s app storage. Many Galaxy models do not offer this option; use Fix 1 or move media instead.

Before formatting: back up every file you want from the card. Formatting permanently erases its contents. An adopted card is encrypted for this phone and cannot simply be moved to another phone to read its data.

Insert the card and open the SD card detected notification, or its page in Settings > Storage.
Only if offered, choose Format another way / Internal storage and follow the formatting prompts. Names vary by manufacturer.
Choose Move content when prompted, or use the card’s later migration option in Settings > Storage.

Eligible apps can use adopted storage, but app developers and the device decide what can move; not every app or all of its data will be relocated.

Fix 3: Move media when app moves are unavailable

Move photos, videos and downloads to the card using Files by Google, Samsung My Files, or your device’s supported file manager.
Confirm the copied files open correctly before deleting the originals. Keep a separate backup of important files.
If the phone exposes neither an app Change option nor adoptable storage, media offloading still frees internal space for apps.
