How to Free Up Photos Space on Your iPhone

Photos and videos are usually the biggest thing on a full iPhone. Here’s how to reclaim space without deleting your memories.

Why: Years of full-resolution photos and 4K video add up fast. The cleanest fix is to keep originals in iCloud and let your iPhone store smaller copies, then clear out the duplicates and large files you don’t need.

Fix 1: Turn on Optimize iPhone Storage

This is the biggest single win. With iCloud Photos on, your iPhone keeps space-saving copies while the full-resolution originals live in iCloud.

1. Open Settings, tap your name, then tap iCloud → Photos.
2. Turn on Sync this iPhone (called iCloud Photos on iOS 15 or earlier).
3. Select Optimize iPhone Storage.

Apple’s description: full-resolution photos and videos are stored in iCloud, and, when needed, space-saving copies are kept on your device. When you open a photo, the original downloads automatically. This only works if you have enough iCloud space for your library, so you may need a larger iCloud+ plan.

Fix 2: Merge duplicate photos

Duplicates from saved messages, edits, and re-downloads quietly waste space:

1. Open Photos and go to your Albums tab.
2. Scroll down to Utilities and tap Duplicates (it appears once iPhone finishes scanning).
3. Tap Merge on a set to combine duplicates into one, keeping the highest quality.

If you don’t see a Duplicates album, your library may have no detected duplicates, or scanning is still running — check back later.

Fix 3: Clear out big videos and use Apple’s suggestions

Video clips are the heaviest items in most libraries:

1. Open Settings → General → iPhone Storage.
2. Tap Photos to see how much space it’s using, then review the Recommendations at the top.
3. On iOS 17 and later, open Recommended for You to surface large files, old screen recordings, and backups you might not need.

Delete the largest clips you no longer want, and empty the Recently Deleted album afterward to actually reclaim the space.
