Google Play Store Won't Download or Install Apps? Here's the Fix
You tap Install or Update in the Google Play Store and nothing happens — the app sits on “Download pending,” shows “Download failed,” or stops partway.
Why: Play Store downloads fail for a handful of mundane reasons: a weak connection, not enough free storage, a wrong clock (which breaks the secure connection to Google’s servers), or a corrupted Play Store cache. Work through these fastest-first.
Settings paths vary by manufacturer (Samsung One UI, Pixel, Motorola, etc.). The wording below follows Google’s generic Android/Pixel docs.
Fix 1: Check connection, storage and restart
These three account for most cases:
- Connection: Connect to a reliable Wi-Fi network rather than mobile data, then retry. A captive-portal Wi-Fi (hotel/airport that needs a sign-in page) will block downloads — switch networks.
- Storage: Open Settings > Storage. Google notes downloads can fail when less than 1 GB is free. If you’re tight on space, clear some (see our Android storage guide).
- Restart: Press and hold the Power button, then tap Restart (or Power off, then turn it back on).
Then reopen the Play Store and try the download again.
Fix 2: Fix the date and time
A wrong clock makes Google’s servers reject the secure connection, silently breaking downloads.
- Open Settings > System > Date & time (on some phones: Settings > General management > Date and time).
- Turn on Set time automatically (and Set time zone automatically).
If they were already on, toggle them off and back on to force a re-sync.
Fix 3: Clear the Play Store cache
A corrupted Play Store cache is the single most common cause of stuck downloads.
- Open Settings > Apps (or Apps & notifications > See all apps).
- Find and tap Google Play Store.
- Tap Storage & cache > Clear cache.
- Reopen the Play Store and retry.
If that doesn’t help, return to the same screen and tap Clear storage (this signs the Store back to defaults but does not remove your installed apps), then open the Store and sign in again if prompted.
Fix 4: Update the Android system
An outdated system can break Play services.
- Open Settings > System > Software update > System update (Samsung: Settings > Software update).
- Install anything offered, then retry the download.
FAQ
It says “Download pending” forever. Make sure another large download isn’t queued ahead of it, you’re on a stable network, and you have free space. Then do Fix 3 (clear Play Store cache).
Only one specific app won’t install. The app may not be compatible with your device or Android version, or your region. Other apps installing fine points to that one app, not your phone.
Clearing Play Store storage — will I lose my apps? No. It resets the Store app itself; your installed apps stay put.
