iPad Screen Won't Rotate? Turn Off Rotation Lock and Other Fixes
Your iPad stays in portrait and won’t switch to landscape when you turn it sideways.
Why: In almost every case Rotation Lock is switched on in Control Center. If that’s off and it still won’t rotate, the app you’re in may not support rotation, or a quick restart is needed.
Fix 1: Turn off Rotation Lock in Control Center
- Swipe down from the top-right corner of your screen to open Control Center.
- Find the Rotation Lock button (a padlock with a circular arrow around it). If it’s highlighted, tap it once so it turns off.
- Close Control Center and turn your iPad sideways. It should now rotate.
When Rotation Lock is on, you’ll also see a small lock icon in the status bar — that’s the giveaway.
Fix 2: Test in an app that supports landscape
Not every app rotates. Developers choose whether their app supports landscape, so some are portrait-only by design.
- Open Safari or Messages — both support landscape.
- Turn the iPad sideways. If those rotate but another app doesn’t, that app simply wasn’t built to rotate, and there’s nothing to fix.
Fix 3: Side switch (older iPads) and a restart
Some older iPads have a physical side switch that can be set to control rotation lock instead of mute:
- Go to Settings → General.
- Under Use Side Switch To, check whether it’s set to Lock Rotation. If it is, flip the physical switch so the orange dot isn’t showing, or change the setting to Mute so Control Center controls rotation instead.
If the screen still won’t rotate in apps that should support it, restart your iPad as a final step. If it still won’t rotate after that, contact Apple Support.
