Android "Google Play Services Keeps Stopping"? How to Fix the Pop-Up
Your Android phone keeps showing “Google Play services keeps stopping” — sometimes over and over, blocking everything else.
Why: Play services is the background framework most Google apps rely on. The error almost always comes from an out-of-date version or corrupted cached data. These fixes go fastest-first.
Settings paths vary by maker (Samsung One UI vs Pixel). Wording below follows Google’s generic Android docs.
Fix 1: Restart and update Google Play services
A restart clears the immediate crash loop, and an outdated version is the most common cause.
- Restart the phone (Power > Restart) to stop the pop-up loop long enough to act.
- Open Settings, tap your profile picture > All services, then under Privacy & Security tap System services > Google Play services.
- Tap Update or Install if offered, then restart again.
Fix 2: Clear the Play services cache
A corrupted cache is the next most likely cause, and clearing it deletes nothing you’ll miss.
- Open Settings > Apps > See all apps > Google Play services.
- Tap Storage & cache > Clear cache.
- Restart the phone and watch for the pop-up.
Fix 3: Clear Play services storage
If clearing the cache didn’t work, reset the app’s data — a heavier step that fixes deeper corruption.
- On the same Google Play services screen, tap Storage & cache > Clear storage (or Manage space) > Clear all data > Delete.
- Heads-up: this can remove some items saved to the device, including passwords, transit cards, and virtual payment cards in Google Pay — you’ll re-add them.
- Restart, then open a Google app so Play services rebuilds its data.
Fix 4: Update Android and the Play Store
A system or Play Store mismatch can keep triggering the error.
- Update Android: Settings > System > Software update (Samsung: Settings > Software update). Install anything offered and restart.
- Clear the Play Store too: Settings > Apps > See all apps > Google Play Store > Storage & cache > Clear cache (then Clear storage if needed), and reopen the Play Store.
