FaceTime Not Working on iPhone? How to Fix Calls That Won't Connect

Published ✓ Verified ⏱️ 2 min read August 24, 2025 · by Ryan Bennett

FaceTime won’t connect — calls fail to go through, you can’t receive them, or the screen just spins.

Why: FaceTime needs a working internet connection and has to be switched on and activated for your number or email. Most failures come down to a weak connection, FaceTime being off, cellular data being blocked for it, a wrong clock, or Screen Time restrictions. Try these fastest-first.

Fix 1: Check your connection and look for an outage

  1. FaceTime needs cellular data or Wi-Fi — confirm you’re connected in Settings > Wi-Fi or Settings > Cellular. Over Wi-Fi it works best on a broadband connection.
  2. Check Apple’s System Status page (search “Apple System Status”) to rule out a FaceTime outage on Apple’s end.
  3. Note: FaceTime isn’t available in every country or region, or with every carrier.

Fix 2: Turn FaceTime off and on, and confirm your address

  1. Go to Settings > Apps > FaceTime and make sure FaceTime is turned on. (On older iOS: Settings > FaceTime.)
  2. If it shows “Waiting for Activation,” toggle FaceTime off, wait, then back on.
  3. Lower down, check that the correct phone number and/or email address are listed and selected so people can reach you.

Fix 3: Allow cellular data and pick the right line

  1. To use FaceTime without Wi-Fi, turn it on for cellular: Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Data) and switch FaceTime on in the app list.
  2. If you have more than one SIM, make sure the phone line you want is on and selected for FaceTime.

Fix 4: Fix the clock, restart, and update

  1. Set the clock automatically: Settings > General > Date & Time and turn on Set Automatically (a wrong time zone quietly breaks activation).
  2. Restart the iPhone (power off, wait, power on).
  3. Install any update: Settings > General > Software Update.

Fix 5: Check Screen Time restrictions

If FaceTime is missing entirely or greyed out, a restriction may be hiding it.

  1. Go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions.
  2. Open Allowed Apps & Features and make sure FaceTime and Camera are turned on.

If FaceTime still won’t connect after all of this, contact Apple Support.

FAQ

FaceTime works on Wi-Fi but not on cellular. Turn it on for cellular under Settings > Cellular > FaceTime, and confirm your data plan and signal are fine.

FaceTime is stuck on “Waiting for Activation.” Confirm date/time is set automatically, you’re online, and you’re signed into your Apple Account, then toggle FaceTime off and on.

The FaceTime app disappeared. It’s likely blocked by Screen Time — check Allowed Apps & Features under Content & Privacy Restrictions.
