How to Clear the Google Play Store Cache and Data on Android

If the Play Store is misbehaving — stuck downloads, crashes, or “can’t install” errors — clearing its cache (and, if that fails, its data) is the single most reliable fix.

Why: The Play Store keeps temporary files to speed itself up, and those files sometimes go stale or corrupt. Clearing the cache throws away those temporary files without touching your account or settings. Clearing storage (data) goes a step further and resets the app to defaults. Neither one removes the apps you’ve already installed.

Paths vary slightly by phone. The steps below follow Google’s generic Android/Pixel wording; Samsung One UI is noted where it differs.

Fix 1: Clear the Play Store cache

Try this first — it solves most problems and changes nothing else.

1. Open Settings > Apps (or Apps & notifications > See all apps).
2. Find and tap Google Play Store.
3. Tap Storage & cache (Samsung: Storage).
4. Tap Clear cache.
5. Reopen the Play Store and try whatever was failing.

Fix 2: Clear the Play Store storage (data)

If clearing the cache didn’t help, reset the Store’s data.

1. From the same Storage & cache screen, tap Clear storage (older phones/Samsung: Clear data).
2. Confirm.

This resets the Play Store to its defaults — it signs you back to defaults and may clear settings like parental controls and password requirements, and you may need to re-accept the Terms of Service. It does not delete your installed apps. Open the Store and sign in if prompted.

Fix 3: Clear Google Play services as well

If the Store still won’t behave, the supporting Google Play services component may be the culprit.

1. Open Settings > Apps > Google Play services.
2. Tap Storage & cache > Clear cache.
3. If problems continue, tap Manage space (or Clear storage / Clear all data) and confirm.

Note: clearing Google Play services data can remove items saved to Google Pay/Wallet, such as payment cards or transit cards, so use it only if cache-clearing didn’t work.
