Android Phone Won't Turn On or Charge? Force Restart and Charging Fixes

Published ✓ Verified ⏱️ 3 min read August 14, 2025 · by Ryan Bennett

Your Android phone is completely dark — it won’t turn on, the screen stays black, or it won’t react when you press the power button. It might be frozen, or the battery may be flat or not charging.

Why: Two common culprits. Either the system has locked up and needs a forced restart (a hardware reboot that works even when the screen is dead), or the battery is fully discharged or not receiving a charge because of a cable, adapter or port problem.

Battery icons, lights and button combos vary by phone. The steps below follow Google’s generic Android/Pixel doc — check your manufacturer’s site for exact indicators.

Fix 1: Force restart (the frozen-phone fix)

A force restart reboots the phone even when the screen is unresponsive. It does not erase anything.

  1. Press and hold the Power button for 5–7 seconds — this restarts most phones.
  2. If nothing happens, press and hold the Power button for about 35 seconds, then wait about 2 minutes.
  3. Still nothing? With the phone plugged in to charge, press and hold the Volume Down + Power buttons together for at least 20 seconds.

Manufacturer note: Samsung phones typically force-restart with Volume Down + Power held ~10 seconds; some older devices used Power + Volume Up. If one combo does nothing, try the other.

Fix 2: Charge for at least 30 minutes

If the battery is fully drained, the phone won’t respond instantly — give it time.

  1. Plug in with a known-good cable and adapter and leave it charging for at least 30 minutes before trying to power on.
  2. Watch for an indicator:
    • A battery icon means it’s off and charging — let it continue.
    • A solid red light means the battery is fully discharged; flashing red means there isn’t enough power yet to turn on. Keep charging.

Fix 3: Rule out the cable, adapter and port

Often the phone is fine and the charging gear isn’t.

  1. Check the port: Shine a light into the charging port and gently clear any dust or lint (a wooden toothpick works; avoid metal).
  2. Swap the cable and adapter: Try a different known-good cable and wall adapter — frayed cables and dead bricks are extremely common.
  3. Test the gear: Use your adapter and cable to charge a different device. If that won’t charge either, the problem is your charger, not your phone.

Fix 4: Check whether it’s a screen problem

If there’s no battery icon or light at all after plugging in, the phone may actually be on but the display is dead.

  1. Do the 35-second Power hold, then wait about 2 minutes.
  2. Call the phone from another phone (or use Find Hub / Find My Device). If it rings or vibrates but the screen stays black, the screen has failed — take it to an authorized repair center.

FAQ

Will a force restart delete my data? No. It’s the equivalent of pulling and reinserting the battery — your apps, photos and settings are untouched. (A factory reset is the one that erases data; that’s different.)

It vibrates or shows a logo then dies in a loop. That’s a boot loop, not a flat battery — let it charge fully first, then if it persists it may need warranty/repair service.

How long should I really hold the power button? Start with 5–7 seconds. If unresponsive, the ~35-second hold is the heavier reset. Holding longer than that won’t help.
