Android Mobile Data Not Working? How to Get Cellular Data Back

Published ✓ Verified ⏱️ 2 min read May 17, 2026 · by Ryan Bennett

Your Android phone shows signal bars but mobile data won’t load anything — pages stall, apps say “no connection,” even though Wi-Fi works fine.

Why: Usually mobile data is toggled off, a temporary network registration glitch needs clearing, or the network settings got scrambled (often right after a software update). These fixes go fastest-first; the last one is a reset.

Settings paths vary by maker (Samsung One UI vs Pixel). Wording below follows Google’s generic Android docs.

Fix 1: Toggle airplane mode and restart

This forces the phone to re-register with the cellular network, which clears most temporary data outages.

  1. Open Settings > Network & internet (Samsung: Connections) > Airplane mode on, wait 10 seconds, then off.
  2. If that doesn’t help, restart the phone (Power > Restart).
  3. Try loading a website again once the signal bars return.

Fix 2: Turn mobile data off and on

A simple toggle re-establishes the data session, and it confirms data is actually switched on.

  1. Settings > Network & internet > Mobile data (Samsung: Connections > Data usage > Mobile data).
  2. Turn Mobile data off, wait a moment, then on.
  3. Check for a data indicator (5G, 4G, LTE, 3G, or H) next to the signal bars — if there’s none, you may be in a no-coverage spot, so move locations and recheck.

Fix 3: Confirm it’s mobile data, not the whole phone

Comparing Wi-Fi against cellular tells you whether the problem is the carrier connection or the device.

  1. Turn Wi-Fi off and Mobile data on, then load a page.
  2. If nothing loads on data but Wi-Fi works, the issue is the cellular connection — continue to Fix 4.
  3. Check you have plan balance and that data roaming is on if you’re traveling: Settings > Network & internet > SIMs/Mobile network > Roaming.

Fix 4: Reset mobile network settings

This wipes scrambled network configuration and is especially effective if the problem started after a system update.

  1. Open Settings > System > Reset options (Samsung: General management > Reset).
  2. Tap Reset Mobile Network Settings (or Reset network settings).
  3. Heads-up: this deletes saved Wi-Fi passwords and Bluetooth pairings too. Confirm, restart, and reconnect.
  4. If data still fails after this, contact your mobile carrier — the SIM or account provisioning may need attention.

FAQ

Wi-Fi works but mobile data is dead — is my phone broken? Probably not. That pattern usually points to the cellular connection: a toggle, restart, or network reset (Fixes 1, 2, 4) fixes most cases.

Does resetting network settings delete my photos or apps? No. It only clears Wi-Fi, mobile, and Bluetooth settings — your files and apps stay.

Still nothing after a reset. Call your carrier. They can re-provision your line, check for an outage, or confirm your SIM and plan are active.
