Can't Sign In to iCloud or "Verification Failed"? How to Fix It
You enter your Apple Account details but iCloud won’t sign you in, or you get “Verification Failed: An unknown error occurred.”
Why: Sign-in can fail for reasons that have nothing to do with your password — an Apple server outage, a wrong clock on the device, an out-of-date OS, or an account that’s been temporarily locked after too many bad guesses. Rule those out before you assume your account is broken.
Fix 1: Check Apple’s servers, then your clock and OS
Three quick checks resolve most sign-in failures.
- Open Apple’s System Status page (apple.com/support/systemstatus) and confirm iCloud and Apple Account show green. If there’s an outage, just wait.
- Make sure the device’s date and time are correct: Settings > General > Date & Time (Mac: System Settings > General > Date & Time) and turn on Set Automatically. A wrong clock breaks the secure handshake and causes “Verification Failed.”
- Install any update: Settings > General > Software Update (Mac: System Settings > General > Software Update).
Fix 2: Confirm the right account and a live connection
- Double-check you’re entering the correct Apple Account email — many people have an old account they forgot about. If unsure which one, check another device that’s already signed in under Settings > [your name].
- Make sure you have a working connection. If you’re on cellular, confirm iCloud is allowed data: Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Data) is on. Try switching between Wi-Fi and cellular.
Fix 3: Enter the two-factor verification code correctly
When you sign in on a new device, Apple sends a 6-digit code to your trusted devices or phone number.
- Enter the full code from the Sign-In Requested prompt on your trusted device (or the texted code) into the new device.
- If no code arrives, on a trusted iPhone open Settings > [your name] > Sign-In & Security > Get Verification Code to generate one manually.
- If you’re signing a third-party app (not Apple’s) into iCloud — like some mail or calendar apps — your normal password won’t work. Create an app-specific password at account.apple.com and use that instead.
Fix 4: Unlock the account, or sign out and back in
- If you see a message that your account is locked or disabled (from repeated failed attempts), go to iforgot.apple.com and follow the steps to unlock it — you’ll typically reset your password as part of this.
- If sign-in still fails on a device that was working before, sign out and back in: Settings > [your name] > Sign Out (Mac: System Settings > [your name] > Sign Out), restart, then sign in again with the freshly confirmed password.
FAQ
I just changed my password and now nothing signs in. That’s expected — re-enter the new password where prompted across your services until each one updates.
“Verification Failed” keeps appearing even with the right password. It’s usually the device clock (Fix 1) or an Apple server hiccup, not your password. Check both before resetting anything.
Why won’t my email app accept my iCloud password? Third-party apps need an app-specific password from account.apple.com, not your main account password (Fix 3).
